Mental Health First Aid Standard

This badge certifies that the participant has completed the following course. According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, one out of every five Canadians will have a mental health condition in any given year. While we frequently have a good understanding of physical illness, we have less understanding of mental health and substance abuse issues. Fear and unfavourable attitudes toward those who are dealing with these issues stem from a lack of understanding. It makes it difficult for people to seek help for themselves or to provide appropriate support to those around them.

Criteria

At the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

• Recognize signs that a person may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis

• Have conversations that encourage a person to:

  • Talk about declines in their mental well-being
  • Discuss professional and other supports that could help with recovery toimproved mental well-being
  • Reach out to these support

• Assist in a mental health or substance use crisis

• Use MHFA actions to maintain one’s own mental well-being

• Topics: Self Directed (Introduction to the course and MHFA actions), Virtual Classroom (Practice applying MHFA actions to situations of declining mental well-being and Guidelines for MHFA conversations with people from diverse cultures and members of the 2SLGBTQ + community) and Virtual Classroom discussing about using of MHFA actions for self-care and practice using MHFA actions in crisis situations.
